Alberta Government Announces New Provincial Continuing Care Agency
Jan 30, 2025 AnnouncementsToday, Alberta’s government announced the establishment of Assisted Living Alberta, a new provincial agency designed to integrate social services, medical and non-medical supports, and continuing care. With demand for continuing care expected to rise by 80 per cent over the next decade, this transformation aims to provide Albertans with better access to the full range of supports they need to maintain their quality of life and independence.
Assisted Living Alberta is on track to become an entity by April 1, and will be operational by fall 2025, aligning medical and non-medical care, increasing continuing care spaces, reducing wait times, and offering wraparound supports for Albertans who require various levels of care. The agency will support seniors, individuals with disabilities, and vulnerable populations needing both temporary and long-term care.
The transition committee, chaired by Dr. Sayeh Zielke, includes leaders from healthcare, continuing care, and social services. Their work will be essential in guiding this transformation to ensure continuity of care and a smooth transition for providers and individuals receiving services.
"The Alberta Continuing Care Association welcomes this transformational move by the Alberta government," says Feisal Keshavjee, ACCA Board Chair and newly appointed transition committee member.
"By bringing social services, medical and non-medical supports, and continuing care together under one health agency, patients will be able to access wraparound supports for the care and services they need."
The government is seeking feedback from Albertans through online engagement open until March 3 at Alberta.ca/lead-the-way. Continuing care providers and health care and continuing care workers will have an opportunity to provide feedback through targeted engagement.
